Chocorua, N. H. [underline]Sept. 8: 1904 [/underline] Dear Sir, I am afraid I am really not able to help or enlighten you in respect to the matter on which I just receive your letter -the question of a "Bibliog- raphy" of my productions early & late. You see, authors in general do [page break] not find themselves interested in a mercilessly complete resuscitation of their writings- there being always, inevitably, too many that they desire to forget & keep buried. This leads them to watch with some detachment the process of digging up. They of course cannot [page break] prevent it & must accept all manner of consequences, but they must at least keep their hands from the pick-axe & the spade. My own impres- sion is that I have hitherto got off well & have been very little bibliographized, for [page break] I have escaped positively knowing of anything of the verb as I have cer- tainly escaped contributing to it. If you so generously enjoy the search I can only congratulate you on the zeal of your curiosity - but I am at a loss to give you my general assistance & am yours most truly [underline] Henry James [/underline Le Roy Phillips, Esq. [page break] [address on envelope] Le Roy Phillips, Esq. Editorial Rooms Ginn & Co. 29 Beacon St. [underline] Boston [/underline]
